I didn’t want to be a fashion designer, and for a good half of my career I didn’t like it. I always wanted to do other things. Attention to detail is of utmost importance when you want to look good.

Sometimes incompetence is useful. It helps you keep an open mind. I am not interested in the past, except as the road to the future. I am not interested in shock tactics. I just want to make beautiful clothes. Instead of buying six things, one thing that you really like. Don’t keep buying just for the sake of it. I always loved aesthetics. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way to live. It pains me physically to see a woman victimized, rendered pathetic, by fashion. Give me time and I’ll give you a revolution.

Fashion is made to become unfashionable. Clothes can transform your mood and confidence. I wish I had invented blue jeans. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity – all I hope for in my clothes. Money is the most corrosive aspect of life today because it means that all attention to detail is forgotten. Those fashion designers are just crazy; but aren’t we all?

I’ve always thought of the T-shirt as the Alpha and Omega of the fashion alphabet. Jeans represent democracy in fashion. Sometimes incompetence is useful. It helps you keep an open mind.
